Back in 1989, as the Berlin Wall fell, Gunther Holtorf and his wife Christine set out on what was meant to be an 18-month tour of Africa in their Mercedes Benz G Wagon. Now, with more than 800000km (500000 miles) on the clock, Gunther is still going. The German former airline executive has travelled the equivalent of 20 times around the planet in the vehicle - which he calls Otto. He says he has never had a serious breakdown. Recently in Vietnam, Canadian-born photographer David Lemke joined Gunther on one section of his epic journey. All images subject to copyright. Mercedes-Benz is referring to the new B-Class as a compact sports tourer and its new design reflects that sportier stance. Official images of the next-generation B-Class have been released here ahead of the model's public debut at the Frankfurt motor show next month and we get a detailed look, with 45 photos in the album, at the new compact. The B-Class has been sleeked-out (now featuring a drag co-efficient of just 0.26) and the new design makes the vehicle look very R-Class-like in its shape. Mercedes-Benz has promised to offer lots of tech goodies in the new B-Class and they deliver on that. Included in the offerings are such functions as Adaptive Headlamp Assist, Blind Spot Assist / Lane Keeping Assist, Attention Assist, Speed Limit Assist, Active Parking Assist, Linguatronic, DISTRONIC PLUS, PRE-SAFE and COLLISION PREVENTION ASSIST with adaptive Brake Assist. A start/stop system comes standard in the next B-Class too. Power plants available begin with the 1.6-liter petrol producing 90 kW (122 PS / 121 hp) and 200 Nm (147 lb-ft) of torque, and continues with another 1.6 offering 115 kW (156 PS / 154 hp) and 250 Nm (184 lb-ft) of torque. For the diesels, there's a 1.8-liter with 80 kW (109 PS / 107 hp) and 250 Nm (184 lb-ft) of torque which is also configured to deliver 100 kW (136 PS / 134 hp) and 300 Nm (221 lb-ft) of torque. Transmissions on offer are the 6-speed manual and 7-speed 7G-DCT dual clutch gearbox.

While other makers turn to photoshops, the Bavarian firm went ahead and developed an actual car, going as far as testing it on the Nurburgring race track. The sport ute packs the same 420-horsepower 4.0-liter V8 engine under the bonnet as the rest of the M3 range, which includes the Coupe, Convertible and Sedan models, adding a rear-axle load capacity of up to 450 kilos or 992 pounds. The load bed itself is clad in high-grade structured aluminium sheeting and provides the biggest cargo capacity ever offered on a M vehicle -- up to 20 standard 46-inch golf bags, according to BMW. It's also the first M3 to be equipped with a trailer tow hitch. BMW said the kerb weight of the pickup undercuts that of the M3 Convertible by around 50 kilograms or 110 pounds. Interestingly, BMW's designers also fitted the M3 Pickup Truck with a Targa top, which shaves another 20kg or 44 pounds and at the same time, lowers the car's centre of gravity when removed. Despite the removal of the rear passenger compartment, the company says measurements in the wind tunnel at the BMW Group's Aerodynamic Test Centre showed a Cd factor on a par with that of the BMW M3 Coup
